A cultural history of the bomber jacketMilitary surplus distributed to the private sector, and through popular culture, including worn by Steve McQueen in movies, it became everyday wear

After the war, a large amount of military surplus was distributed to the private sector; flight jackets, including the B-3 and MA-1, were no exception. The high durability and practicality of these jackets were highly valued, and they became popular as everyday wear.

One of the cultural icons of the bomber jacket that continues to this day is the actor Steve McQueen, who embodied the military-inspired rugged style of the bomber jacket when he wore one in the classic film “Wings of War. In ‘ Fighting Wings,’ McQueen portrayed an airman in a B-3 as he faced a harsh environment.

Later in ”The Hunter,” he wore an MA-1 to showcase his light, urban military style. Thus, the bomber jacket changed its position from military equipment to the wardrobe of the general public against the backdrop of postwar logistical structures and changes in popular culture.

Where the bomber jacket is todayTwo trends created by the heritage of the B-3 and the modernity of the MA-1

Today, the B-3 and MA-1 are both available in a variety of models. The B-3 and MA-1 are currently available in a wide range of models, from rugged models that are close to the original specifications, to unique models reconstructed by fashion brands, to affordable models developed by fast-fashion brands.

Among them, the B-3, with its heavy combination of leather and mouton, blends easily with heritage-oriented outfits, and many brands that reconstruct vintage items from their own perspectives, such as RRL and Buzz Lixons, have added the B-3 to their lineups.

On the other hand, the MA-1, with its lightweight nylon material and simple design, has an affinity with urban life and is released by a wide range of brands from street to mode. The MA-1 released by Raf Simons in his 2001 Fall/Winter collection is sold at a high price on the secondary market.
